the way it is

it's a thrilling thing, to catch something happy on camera.
elijah has gotten so much better with sitting at the table for meals. his own brand of sitting
he often leans or rocks himself nearly off his seat, but it's better than running off.
lately his preferred position is standing. it's my favorite. he bends down to scoop up his food,
singing a few lines of 'jingle bells' or 'jesus loves me' in between bites.
a few nights ago, he was more rowdy than usual, so i asked him to sit down and relax.
he didn't sit down, but he did settle. he picked up his lego magazine and stood still for a few minutes.
pouring over the pages, pointing things out that he wanted me to know about too.
he even finished his meal.

we are in full vacation mode. not sure what that means,
but it sounds like a proper description for the tone of do-nothingness that we're embracing
patrick has several days off from work and i'm so happy for him!
we're probably not traveling anywhere, and that's ok. it's a treat to just sit around in our jammies,
watching movies, playing dinosaurs and play-doh together. all ding dang day.
i mean, it's practically heaven on earth.

lord willing, elijah will get a haircut today.
one of his aba therapists hooked us up with someone who has experience
cutting hair for kiddos with autism and sensory issues.
we are excited about the possibility of it actually happening.
not just to cut his shaggy mess, because let's face it. it's a cute mess.
the true joy here will be in knowing that he was able to have a low anxiety experience
with the hair dresser. he is terrified of scissors, clippers and anyone near his head.
and if it doesn't work out today? he tried. and we can try again!

i read this yesterday and wanted to share it:

because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.
psalm 63:3

"to be satisfied in god is the essence of what it means to love god.
loving god may include obeying all his commands;
it may include believing all his word;
it may include thanking him for all his gifts;
but the essence of loving god is enjoying all he is.
it is this enjoyment of god that glorifies his worth most fully,
especially when all around our soul gives way."

  13. Psalm 63:3 is my life verse. "love better than life," sometimes -when life is too good- it's unimaginable. sometimes -when life is too hard- i grab onto the hope and future of those words.

    enjoy your staycation!
