who doesn't love to begin with dessert?

i love pumpkin pie. only this recipe though.
unless, it's made by my little cutie son at school

most darling thanksgiving craft i've ever seen!

something not darling, but rather the dumbest thing i've ever seen
is a wonky turkey on thanksgiving morning. i'll explain.

leftover turkey would make an amazing panini, as seen here

pioneer woman is the jam. amen.

but we don't have any leftover turkey. we barely and had any day-of turkey.

i purchased our turkey frozen, it was small and looked cute enough.
i've a little history, with success in the thanksgiving day turkey arena.

like in 2009, as a host for a large crowd in our first small apartment here
i was super smart and martha-y and chose to spatchcock my turkey bird.
harder than it looks, friends. trust. me.
the turkey turned out delicious
after an exhausting, possibly expletive-filled fight with that silly bird,
in my tiny apartment kitchen.
then i had two years of perfect success again is that braggy?, ditching that spatchcock method.
obviously.

back to this year.
thanksgiving morning, i pulled my thawed bird from the fridge and began to prep her for the big meal.
only, when i unwrapped the poor thing, she had only one leg and one wing. i realized this after
staring straight down at it for several minutes feeling a little like kid who just had her sucker stolen.
turkey girl was lop-sided to the max, wonky as the day is long.
she wouldn't sit right, no matter what rig i tried to pull.
this is when we started to laugh out loud. the keep from crying type, you know?
i chose to resist further battling and just got her ready and popped her in the oven.

long story a little less long, she took f o r e v e r to cook, and so unevenly, and just SO BAD.
i sliced off the good parts. like maybe two small servings worth. and left that turkey sitting on the counter feeling sorry for herself. i choked back a few tears thanksgiving is ruined!!! i silently screamed. then, as usual,
i got a little lesson from all this. the lord is funny/gentle like that.

we did have a taste of turkey, many people did not even have a clean drink that day.

we ate extra sweet potato fluff, green bean casserole and on and on. like kings, we ate!
just turkey-free kings.

and then we laughed about ol' turkey girl some more. and ate pie for dayzzz.

we're also watching christmas movies!
it's basically a party over here.

well, elijah is super sick, so a relaxed party.

we're getting fresh snowfall right this minute, i adore it. and pray for more!
and we are beyond grateful that the city shovels our steps and sidewalks for us. amen.

we got a wee bit crafty yesterday.
for five dollars, i found a little set of 12 wooden ornaments at target.
they're a fun, non-overwhelming activity for elijah
and they'll make great little additions to gifts this year!

how was your thanksgiving weekend?
what's the best memory you took away this year?

  1. Love the turkey mishap! They actually make for great stories to tell over and over down the road. Like the one time my friend bought an apple pie for a get together not realizing it was apple pie WITH jalepenos in it! I mean who even makes such a pie? Well, I was the first to bite into it and discover the fact but then we laughed until we cried. And still laugh about it now :)

  2. :( I'm so sorry about your turkey, Hannah.
BUT...your blog makes me smile, so there's that.

And I have to say that I love your IG stream of pictures. Each one makes me happy.

  3. Well, if that turkey story didn't make my day, I don't know what will. You saw the point, and that's the point. Amen.

    Love you.

  4. sad to hear about your turkey! note: my mom does not cook. one year she decided to cook a turkey and forgot to turn the oven on. she did notice until noon that the turkey was never cooking. we can laugh now, at the time not so much :)

  5. Too funny Hannah! Now I am interested in the mystery of WHY your turkey was was missing extra parts?! A little too much "cheer" for the butcher? Was it a picked-on bird in the barnyard?

I'm sorry that you didn't have enough for leftovers-we know how valued they are in our house! (I did a TSA inspection of Rachel's cooler she was taking back to school to confiscate a bit of turkey for our Turkey Tetrazzini:)

But it looks like you three had a grand day full of thankfulness anyway!Blessings!

  7. so sorry about your wonky turkey, but if it makes you feel any better i got a chuckle about your turkey stories:)

and guess what? this year after I put a few side dishes on my plate, i declared i didn't have enough room for turkey. so. turkey is a bit over rated in my book. but yes, we are SO dang lucky to have good food in this country here we live in. i feel bad for taking my turkey for granted. guess i'm a little spoiled....
