grateful {for the bright side}

i really strive to keep on the sunny side, you know.

it's the only way to really live.
do you believe that?

believing that it's excellent to look on the bright side is great.
but knowing what the bright side is, and really seeing it? well, that's the key to everything wonderful.

where do we look?

i love
holding hands and sitting close to my husband under a crazy colorful quilt
the sound of my boy belly laughing over who even knows what
tortilla chips and salsa, with a bit of sour cream blended in
chocolate chip cookies straight from the oven
brand new rolls of washi tape
fixing up my coffee every morning and listening to it brew
the smell of cinnamon candles
freshly picked blueberries
new music from favorite artists

those things and more can really brighten up a day.
they help me smile and put happy in my heart.

but they don't have the power to keep me tuned-in to joy.

and what about when there aren't any tangible happy things?

when the darkness isn't lifting and even your friends and family are nowhere to be found.
when life feels lonely, filled with health concerns, lay-offs, broken dreams and just plain "bad luck".

where can we look then? is there joy? hope to be seen through a cracked and tear-streaked lens?

i read this yesterday in my favorite devotional:

sweet friends. that is the bright side that we can look upon! in every moment.

the lord is there, inexhaustible in strength and grace, that's perfectly measured out for our needs.

this is the legit bright side.
this is where we must look.
joy is abundant and hope never fails when we gaze at jesus and we rest there, in his tender care.

but he said to me,
“my grace is sufficient for you,
for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
therefore i will boast all the more gladly
of my weaknesses, so that the power of christ
may rest upon me.
