think spring {sunshine in my soul}

it's february. this means that i survived one of the hardest months of the year. for me.
winter is, and always has been, a season that i struggle with. gloom and despair tend to seep in.
they like to have a little picnic in my heart. a grey, quilt-less and dessert-less picnic.
this is my third winter in north dakota. surprisingly, these winters have been the easiest ones for me.
they have also been the longest and the coldest of my life. but easier still! praise jesus.
it "warmed up" to 30 degrees yesterday, melting things a bit. only until it froze up again.
now a dangerous ice covers all the land.
or at least where i can see.

and that's the thing. it's only as far as i can see.

somewhere,
there are pebbles in a  flowing, not frozen brook.
there are leafy green trees and bright green grass.
a lunch shared by girlfriends, on a patio, in the sun.
somewhere there are birds chirping and kids getting exhausted from swimming outside.

so. instead of letting the gloom carry on any longer, i will look beyond what i can see.

i'll pull out some bright, cheerful colors and imagine lots of sunlight.

i think i'll make a fruit salad, and bbq chicken for dinner. channel summer.
or at least spring.
sunshine. new growth.
those things can be had now, in winter.
when i look beyond what i can see.

happy are those who hear
the joyful call to worship,
for they will walk in the
light of your presence, lord.
{psalm 89:15nlt}

have you ever heard this old song? it's a goodie:

"There is sunshine in my soul today,
More glorious and bright
Than glows in any earthly sky,
For Jesus is my Light.

O there’s sunshine, blessed sunshine,
When the peaceful, happy moments roll;
When Jesus shows His smiling face,

There is sunshine in the soul.
There is music in my soul today,
A carol to my King,
And Jesus, listening, can hear
The songs I cannot sing.

There is springtime in my soul today,
For, when the Lord is near,
The dove of peace sings in my heart,
The flowers of grace appear.

There is gladness in my soul today,
And hope and praise and love,
For blessings which He gives me now,
For joys “laid up” above."

happy wednesday to you. make it sunny. make it great!

  3. Here is El Paso it's a balmy 70 degrees today. Just wanted to make you jealous! Just kidding! I used to want to live in the north with all the cold, being from Dallas, we hardly get snow, and when we do, it's gone quickly. But, now, I am more content with the warmer weather. Guess I'm getting old!

  6. I have a spring in my step & sunshine in my soul today also. It got up to 53* here yesterday. Something about the days getting longer & more light-filled is helping me. Of course my current prayer to desire right things...may have something to do with it! ;) The birds will be chirping & the brook a bubblin' before we know it. :)

  8. I did the same thing with dinner last week! I made potato salad and it was gobbled up! My husband even said "Tastes a little like summer". It's a very cold, rainy day here today...maybe I should do it again tonight :)
    Happy Wednesday!

  9. Oh my! I totally get this. January is a rather depressing month all around! I'm glad spring is almost here. My mom used to sing us that song when we were little. I love it!

  11. Well, I hate to tell ya, but it's 70 degrees in NC today. Of course, me being here, I'd rather have your snow and ice, but I do understand the dreariness of it all. Praise the Lord though-- it means Spring's on its way!

  14. Oh, beautiful. beautiful you. I can say that having been here for only 1 minute. This. is. lovely.
And you know what? I totally understand where you are coming from because I lived in Calgary, Alberta for 7 years. Winter is HARD! (Umm... figuratively of course and literally.) How glad am I that you commented on my blog and that you brought me over here with your lovely kindness wrapped in a comment! So glad to have "met" you today.

  15. i second that, hannah. since you know all about the "grey" winters on the shore, you'll know how bad they are for us gals who are influenced by the weather. yuck.
    BUT...
did you know that you literally have a soul full of sunshine? you know what i always remember about you is that you have a fondness for some fun colorful kicks on your feet:)

    miss you.

  17. Very good ideas for summer channeling, Hannah. :) January is tough for me too -hard not to feel blah. I've never heard this song - I'll have to look for the music - so sweet!

  18. I would gladly trade you spots for a week. It's brittle and sunny in California, and every day I am praying for rain. At least rain snow would be a dream come true.
That song reminds me of my grandma she would sing while working in her garden. She knew so many good ones.

  23. This may go against your neat and clean sensibilities but one time, during a particularly dreary Buffalo winter, my friend and I brought in a baby pool, filled it a bit(with warm water), surrounded it with warm lamps, put on our bathing suits and "laid out" on towels. Didn't get a tan but sure had fun trying to 'beat out" Winter!

  24. Love that song... and your purposefully positive attitude!
