gratitude

when i think about what i'm thankful for,
so often it's physical, temporal blessings.

my family, even the crazy ones
my kitchen aid mixer, it makes holiday prep so easy!
comfy coats, hats and boots for the frigid cold
money to pay the electric bill, and money to shop for groceries
internet access, and encouraging blogs to read
coffee and a way to brew it each day...

i'm convicted though, about my not being always grateful for spiritual blessings as well.

the holy spirit's softening of my heart, i'm becoming less irritable
redemption for my sins, all of them
the lord hears my prayers, even when i don't have the words
the providence of god, he has every detail under his control

as we're pondering our blessings
and giving thanks this thanksgiving,
let's focus on our soul blessings, too.
let's push that gratitude past turkey day,
and walk in thankfulness every day.

gratitude
is the fairest blossom
which springs from the soul.

What mighty praise,
O God, belongs to you in Zion.
We will fulfill our vows to you,
for you answer our prayers.
All of us must come to you.
Though we are overwhelmed by our sins,
you forgive them all.
What joy for those you choose to bring near,
those who live in your holy courts.
What festivities await us inside your holy Temple.
You faithfully answer our prayers
with awesome deeds, O God our savior.
You are the hope of everyone on earth,
even those who sail on distant seas.
You formed the mountains by your power
and armed yourself with mighty strength.
You quieted the raging oceans
with their pounding waves
and silenced the shouting of the nations.
Those who live at the ends of the earth
stand in awe of your wonders.
From where the sun rises to where it sets,
you inspire shouts of joy.
You take care of the earth and water it,
making it rich and fertile.
The river of God has plenty of water;
it provides a bountiful harvest of grain,
for you have ordered it so.
You drench the plowed ground with rain,
melting the clods and leveling the ridges.
You soften the earth with showers
and bless its abundant crops.
You crown the year with a bountiful harvest;
even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.
The grasslands of the wilderness become a lush pasture,
and the hillsides blossom with joy.
The meadows are clothed with flocks of sheep,
and the valleys are carpeted with grain.
They all shout and sing for joy!

  1. That's so true!
Whenever I count my blessings, they are usually temporal... but even without them, Jesus would be enough. And that is so much to be grateful for.
    have a beautiful weeeek!

  6. it's so mindblowing isn't it? to think that the God who 'quieted the raging oceans', the God who could do anything and everything, chose to take the one path that would lead to the cross for us. that's amazing :)

"What joy for those you choose to bring near, those who live in your holy courts."
help me God to "enter Your gates with thanksgiving in my heart and Your courts with praise every. single. day."
