a note on gossip

don't do it.

answer not a fool according to his folly,
lest you be like him yourself.
proverbs 26:4esv

spurgeon's practical wisdom, one of my favorite books,
has a most useful chapter on minding your own business.
i'll share the last paragraph with you:

"if folks meddle with our business it is best to take no notice of them;
there's no putting them out like letting them stop where they are.
they are never so offended as when people neither offend them or take offense at them.
you might as soon stop all the frogs from croaking
as quiet idle gossips when they once get on the chat.
stuff your ear with wool and let them jabber until their tongue lies still,
because they have worn all the skin off of it.
'where no wood is, the fire goeth out', and if you don't answer them,
they can't make a blaze for want of fuel.
treat them kindly, but don't give them the treat of quarrelling with them.
follow peace with all men, even if you cannot overtake it."

i am letting gossip stop with me, and encourage you to do the same! xo

  2. It is so easy to gossip & I don't think "most" people have bad intentions when doing it. They just don't realize how hurtful gossip can be. Glad you posted this. This is a great reminder!

  3. Such a good reminder. It's so easy for us to even gossip with our prayer requests! It definitely needs to stop. Thanks for this!

  6. "Gossip involves saying behind a person’s back what you would never say to his or her face.
Flattery means saying to a person’s face what you would never say behind his or her back." - R. Kent Hughes

  11. I'm with Jordan Anne, it's not always easy to end it with ourselves, sometimes it's easier to give in and go off but this was a great encouragement to just ZIP IT! ;0)

  13. I love that pic you used. This post makes me think of the "Pick a little talk a little pick pick pick pick" song from The Music Man. hehe

There is definitely some good advice in this book you speak of!! The Bible talks a lot about controlling our tongues, too... It's definitely important. Thanks for the encouragement this morning to hold my tongue!

  18. . . . AND if you gossip habitually about my family and then are hoo-hoo to me then let the record show i am extremely annoyed with you and would rather you not be hoo-hoo at all.

  20. I love the picture you used! I was just having this conversation with a friend the other day. If someone is constantly talking to you about other people, what must they be saying about you when you are not around? Great post friend!

  21. This is so important, Hannah. Thank you. I love this phrase... 'where no wood is, the fire goeth out' I am going to think about this as I use my words for God's glory.

  23. AAAAAAMEN!!! I love this post!! I feel that gossip is just so rampant all around us - even, unfortunately, in Christ's body, and especially among us women (which is why Scripture specifically addresses us!) I don't want to be a part of that culture, I don't want to be the woman roaming from house to house, rather than keeping my eyes on my own home. Thanks for the encouragement!
