moniker

i really love my son's name.
elijah grey.
he is usually called by elijah, sometimes "e.g.".
at home, we mostly use nicknames.
elijah has many nicknames.
"big e" is a main one.
i say it quickly though, sounds like "biggie".
somehow he's earned the name "beaver" or "beav".
maybe some spin-off of biggie, who knows.
i am weird.
those are the most normal sounding nicknames the poor kid has.
the others are much too strange to share.
i am weird.
elijah doesn't care. he answers to my voice, no matter what i call him.
some day soon he'll be talking better. he'll have a preference of what name he'll go by.
for now, i'll just enjoy watching his face light up when i say his name of the moment.

do you use nicknames with your children?

  1. Anapants, Haleykins, Hayhay, Annerbanner, Haley-ba-squaley, Anabananapants...yeah. I feel you. I LOVED that post yesterday about Elijah btw - I tried to comment and it wouldn't work for me.

  2. Moira suddenly becomes Mo, Little Mo, MoMo, Fro-Mo-Yo (in honor of our fave frozen yogurt place, Menchies), Monkeroo, and so on...many more that are probably too embarassing to share. Peyton is also Peypey and Peyto (like Pey-toe) and a few others.

  3. I am crazy about nicknames! My kids are called all kinds of things, especially my daughter. My favorite nickname for her is Sugar Bean (the sugar part comes from my nickname, and the bean just because it's cute). When she designed her custom Converse she had "Sugar Bean" stitched on them. So cute!

  4. (I have always LOVED the name you chose for your son-it is rhythmical and descriptive)!

I think we chose names that couldn't be made into nicknames too easily BUT I have always used "Beautiful","Sunshine" and "Handsome"when I saw my kids first thing in the morning or, now, when they call me on the phone.(The girls have said how heart-warming this has been over the years).

BUT I do have a habit(as also pointed out by the kids)of using the word "Sweetie" or "Sweetheart" when I scolded my kids or am having a "serious" conversation with them. Funny, b/c this is what my dad would do too. I always knew when he was irritated b/c he would start with "Listen, Sweetheart".....:-)

  5. I'm queen of giving weird nicknames. Jude gets Judester most of the time. Sometimes, we throw in a Judakers, Juders, or Judifer.

But your story of the evolution to Beav reminds me of my nickname for my sister. Her name is Tatum, and it started with Potatum (like a potato). That became P-Tat, which became Pete. Then she didn't like being called a boy name, so it became Peef for some reason. And it stuck. She is Peef only to me. But now some of her college friends have picked up on the name, too! Hahaha!

  6. Currently I call Ivy "Baby Angel" or "Angel" about 90% of the time. The other 10% I call her "Baby one" "Angel One", "MiniBen", "Sasser", "Ivy Iverson" or "St. Ives"

    :) I love nicknames!!!

  10. Ha! Love this:) We named our kids so they wouldn't have nicknames! But alas, Slone is Sloney-butt (his dad calls him that) and Bo is Turbo. But I find myself calling him Turbie all the time!

my mother was the Queen of nonsensical nicknames!

i get it honest! my children have a plethera of nicknames. some make sense (come from their given names) and some DON'T! i'm thinking of you, Salty:) i will always do this to my children.

bonus: this mother makes up silly songs all. day. long.

  13. I chose the name Avery Jayne specifically so we would call Avery AJ. However, somehow that's been shortened to Jay, or Jay-Bird, or even Bird. Avery probably thinks I'm nuts. The other day she told me she's rather be called Katie. HA!

  18. I was chuckling while reading this, because my hubby and I have some weird nicknames for our "kids" (ahem... cats...) but it's so fun! If you're weird, then we're all weird! ;-)

  19. there are a lot of children in our house so there are a lot of nicknames! Hannah is one of our middle kids so she often gets called kra-hannah. It started when we would call for our oldest Kristen and mean to call Hannah! Now it is a daily joke! Our boy has a million nicknames! Bubba, Booger, bub, buddy, the boy!

  20. My mom wouldn't let anyone give us nicknames as kids (except that we were always "the twins"). I love nicknames, my kids are Spunky, Sunshine (or Beanie - she's my "beanie baby") and Sprout. The names totally fit. And they are my own pet names, I like it that I have names for them that are just between us (and daddy). There's something special about that (and they'll get old enough to tell you - Spunky says "don't call me BUDDY!!!" but he still likes me calling him Spunky).
